Riff Assignment Part Two
John Hegarty
The next book by Eric Carle that I read was the Grouchy ladybug. I chose this book because it was pretty similar to the first book I read by him. Also It also has many aspects of my own writing as well. The common themes that were addressed include how the ladybug learned his lesson from trying to fight the other larger animals. This will teach children not to think that are invincible. Near the end of the story the ladybug learned his lesson when the Whale actually fought back unlike the other animals. This also teaches kids to think before they say something out loud. This is important so that they don’t get in trouble for what they say. The ladybug got lucky with the first couple of animals, however was not lucky with the biggest animals he wanted to have a fight with. The common settings in this book with how I would create my children’s story would be a nature setting. Since I like to relate my story with animals it would take place in a nature setting just like the two books I have read so far. The characters go through a learning experience which I would touch on in my story.
The common ways to arrange this text was time. Every hour he tried to fight a new animal that was bigger than him. Like the other book I read he used time as well to make the story have more order. This also gives the reader a sense of time. I most likely would use some sort of time. It could be by hour like the Grouchy ladybug or days at a time. Also how Carle arranged the text in this story was how he used repetition. He does this to make the part “do you want to fight sound more important to the reader. Repetition gives the children a sense of how grouchy the ladybug was towards all the other animals. I would use this style in my writing because it helps the person reading it remember what the main focus of the story was.
The way he using language to create distinctive effects was whenever the ladybug seemed to talk it was always in a negative way. If he did not make the ladybug grouchy that it would make the story hard to follow. When making my story I would make sure that how the character is supposed to act is how they say their quotations. He also uses the different animals and how they would defend themselves if they were to get in a fight. This enhances the way you look at the animal. For example the bee stuck out his stinger to create effects of how the bee would fight. I would use this in my story to enhance the animal characters that I would choose.
